Maths Vids: Online Support for Second Level Maths Students
The aim of this project is to create an online resource that will support students preparing for the Junior and Leaving Certificate maths exams. Taking into account, the fact that maths is a subject that many students find challenging, the objective is to create a website where students and teachers can view, upload, share and comment on worked solutions to past exam paper questions. There are many websites out there that offer a similar service, however ‘Maths Vids’ has been developed to specifically target those studying and teaching second level maths in Ireland.
‘Maths Vids’ is a web-based application that allows users to view and upload video solutions to Junior and Leaving Certificate maths exam paper questions. Each video has a comments table that allows users to pose questions and interact with other users. There were many iterations of the project from an android app to the final, web-based app. After carrying out some research into the different options, it was decided to build the website using ‘Laravel’. ‘Laravel’ is a PHP web framework that makes tasks such as routing authentication, sessions and caching more friendly for developers. Therefore using ‘Laravel’ meant that a secure login system could be easily created, and it also helped manage user roles within the application. This application has two different views depending on the user role. The first role is the general ‘user’. Users are able to log into their account and view newly added content for Maths solutions. They can also add their own video solutions to problems as well as commenting on other videos. The second role is the ‘admin’ role. Admins are able to monitor user activity. They have permission to delete content from other users if some content is deemed to be irrelevant. Admins can also change user roles. This ability was originally to be completed strictly through the database but it was later implemented as an option in the admin dashboard.
The goal of the project is to provide students and teachers with a video tutorial application which showcases solutions to maths exam papers. The research that was carried out with second level Leaving Certificate students proved that there was a demand for the proposed idea. The results showed that the surveyed students believed that the flexibility of the video format would allow them to consume the information at their own pace. The website hopes to support students who are looking for a maths exam solutions based website catered specifically to them.
