The Descent

The aim of the project was to develop a narrative-driven game. The players are following a story-line interspersed with interactive game-play.

Project Description

The Descent is a narrative driven, 3D PC game developed with the Unity games-engine. The player must interact with various objects in the house environment in order to solve the mystery of the protagonist Jeremy. He is awaking beside the mutilated body of his brother William. The Descent doesn't require intensive game-play, meaning that anyone can enjoy the story.  The game was developed using the JavaScript and C# scripting language inside the Unity games-engine. The 3D environment and models were built sourced from different in-engine assets or were custom-made in Adobe Photoshop.

Project Findings

Audio plays an important part in the project in creating suspense and atmosphere. This is why it must be experienced using headphones. Psychological games, as well as movies involving a tragic event or a horror situation, have always been popular with the general public, as they explore the fears of human beings and what it takes to keep the audience involved in what is happening. The feeling of a real place and time is brought to life by creating a story that is realistic and makes the player feel as though it's something that can happen to anyone. Tension and curiosity piques people's interest when they are enjoying a good game or a movie, which is why we wanted to investigate this genre accompanied with the interactive storytelling game aspects.
